Paris Hiton - Out of Africa
Paris Hilton traveled to Johannesburg with her musician boyfriend Benji Madden, guitarist of the band Good Charlotte. She had vowed to embark on a 'global humanitarian tour' after her release from incarceration last year and true to her word, she took time off her rock chick duties to visit a local orphanage in Pretoria.
Wonderful photo opportunity aside, the staff were greatly impressed with Paris, describing her as 'a gentle lady.'
Paris and Madden also took the chance to hobnob with local socialites although actress Khanyisile Mbau, who coins herself, 'the Paris Hilton of South Africa', sounded a bit put out by missing the chance to have her picture taken with America's favourite tinsel queen. Maybe she'll get another chance in June as Paris is said to be lining up a return visit.
Let's hope that by then she has brushed up her geography skills a little. When asked what she thought of South Africa, Paris's reply was, “I love Africa in general — South Africa and West Africa, they are both great countries.”
It’s really a shame that she didn’t get to travel to the countries of North Africa and East Africa but at least Paris didn't come home with the latest celebrity accessory - a cute little African orphan.
It is not only celebs that show a remarkable ignorance of the world they live in of course. I think that maybe Miss South Carolina, Lauren Caitlin was on to something when she gave her eloquent response to why some Americans can’t find the US on a world map.
She said “I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uhmmm, some people out there in our nation don’t have maps and uh, I believe that our, I, education like such as uh, South Africa, and uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, uhhh, our education over here in the US should help the US, uh, should help South Africa, it should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future, for us.”
